Small spaces can still be big on comfort and style-and our Canopy design experts
are here to show you how. Just follow our eight helpful hints, and you'll be surprised
at how roomy any room can feel.
1. Create unity. Scattered and mismatched
collections can make spaces feel crowded. Group similar items together on one shelf.
Arrange books with books, games with games, and collectibles with like collectibles.
2. Get reflective. It's true: large wall mirrors create the illusion of a
large room. Our Round and Rectangular Mirrors are generously sized with finishes
to match Canopy furniture.
3. Pair up. Using two rugs instead of one gives
a sense of spaciousness and adds a cozy look. Choose two rugs of the same style
or two styles with complementary colors, such as our Boardwalk Stripe Rug with our
solid-color Tufted Border Rug.
4. Add a multitasker. An ottoman provides
a soft, flat surface that works as a table or extra seating for company. Our Upholstered
Storage Ottoman also has hidden space for stowing toys, pillows, blankets and other
things that don't fit in the closet.
5. Keep it simple. Opt for streamlined
furniture with straight and simple lines. Elaborate details such as scrolled arms
and turned legs on furniture can make a room look busy and overwhelm a small space.
Our Upholstered Sofa and Chair are designed with straightforward, classic designs
that work well in tight spaces.
6. Lighten up. A well-lit room can make
a space feel roomier. Keep windows uncovered to maximize natural light during the
day. For lighting, consider adding a mix of table lamps, torchiere lamps or bookshelf
lighting to brighten the room after dark.
7. Add a focus. Look for one
large-scale piece, such as a full-size sofa, a Tall Table placed in a corner or
a large wall mirror to trick the eye and make the space feel larger.
8. Contain clutter. Stray magazines, paperwork, toys, and odds and ends
can break up the flow of a small room and make it feel smaller. Keeping these items
hidden away in Storage Baskets, bins or cubbies will open up the space and make
it more inviting. For tips on organizing, see
